Title: A Dragons Tale, 2017

Medium: cottonwood bark and cherry wood / Dimensions: approximately 15" X 6"

Statement: The piece of cottonwood bark I acquired had two protruding edges that made me think of a fairy tale castle. So, I carved a castle on a rocky crag as befits a fairy tale. When I finished the carving, I thought it looked like it belonged in a fairy tale, but what's the story? A fellow carver was cutting a piece of cherry wood on the band saw and discarding small pieces as he cut out his pattern. With his permission, I gathered the pieces and thought about what I could do with them. Looking at my castle and the small pieces of cherry wood I came up with a story and proceeded to carve the head, wings, legs, feet and tail of an imaginary dragon. My dragon was near sighted and as a result not a very good flyer especially when he went out a night looking for villagers to terrorize. While doing his thing one night he met up with my fairy tale castle. His head went right through the castle and came out the other side so he is now stuck and can't get his head out. Poor guy!
