Cathy Lorraway
As a “plein air” or on location painter, local landscapes inspire me as well as my travel memories. I try to express my emotional response to the sights and sounds of nature by using media, like pastel, in a gestural, loose way to help transport the viewer to their sensory memories of a place. I love the plein air challenge e.g. portraying changing cloud patterns while battling Mother nature. Using plein air studies and photographic references, I often enlarge these images into larger acrylic or oil canvases, while experimenting with different colours for under paintings and grounds.
My art has evolved from my studies at the Ontario College of Art Drawing and Painting program (A.O.C.A and BFA), my experiences teaching art and photography, and recently from many online and local workshops. I continue to teach, currently adults, as well as volunteer as the Fireside Lounge Gallery Coordinator for the Burlington Fine Art Association at the Art Gallery of Burlington. My work has found homes in Canada and abroad. I have been honoured to participate in juried shows nationally and locally, earning Pastel Artist Canada (PAC) signature status.
